Actor Samuel Johnson OAM has been hospitalised following a car accident at the weekend.

The news was shared by Johnson's sister Hilde in a post to social media saying, "Early Saturday night Sam was on his way to visit family when he was accidentally hit by a car.

"Our ambos got him picked up and tucked away safely in hospital in record time. I followed them in.

"The fantastical medical staff are in overdrive taking care of his sore head. He's awake and not too happy that he doesn't have his pants - nobody loves a hospital gown. Hearing his voice is lovely, but can't wait for hugs when it's safe."

The fully extent of his injuries are unclear at this time.

The much-loved actor became a household name in the early 2000s for his role of Evan Wylde in The Secret Life Of Us and would go on to star alongside Mick Molloy and Judith Lucy in the bowling club themed 2002 film Crackerjack

In 2012, Johnson launched the Love Your Sister charity alongside his sister Connie to raise money for cancer research. Over $13 million has been raised by the charity since.

Johnson portrayed Australian music legend Molly Meldrum in the 2016 mini-series Molly, which saw him win the Gold Logie for his role. In addition to the Gold, Johnson was also awarded the Silver Logie for Best Actor, while the show won Best Drama Program.

"To be honest, this is the holy grail, both creatively and personally," Johnson about being selected by Meldrum for Molly.

"Molly is a character. As an actor this is the best role you could ever hope to find. You spend your whole career dreaming of a role like this. I was terrified, but the panic was convincingly overshadowed by my excitement about the opportunity."

More to come.
