Sydney festival NYE In The Park has confirmed it will not be proceeding with its planned midnight fireworks display tonight.
Organisers have released a statement today confirming the cancellation and pledging the financial resources from the fireworks to the NSW Rural Fire Service "in support [of] their continued heroic efforts in keeping us all safe".
"NYE In The Park is a positive festival in its nature. It celebrates the year that’s been and anticipates the opportunities for the year to come," the statement reads.
"Along with other positive pioneering initiatives at the festival around Harm Minimisation and Sustainability, after consultation with the ticket holders (via poll) and the event stakeholders, NYE In The Park will not be proceeding with its midnight fireworks display in 2019."
It comes following a public Facebook post where organisers polled attendees about whether or not the fireworks display should be pulled. Over 1200 users selected the option to "can the fireworks and donate the money to the NSW Rural Fire Service instead".
NYE In The Park will feature performances from a stack of big-name acts including Hermitude, Girl Talk, The Jungle Giants, Bag Raiders, SAFIA and Crooked Colours at Victoria Park, Camperdown.
The cancellation comes following the announcement that drug amnesty bins will be debuted at the event.
“Working closely with NSW Health we can confirm we will be rolling out the use of amnesty bins at NYE In The Park 2019 to help ensure the safest possible festival for all," organisers told The Music last week.
