Oztix | News | Aussies Listened To A Lot (No Really, A LOT) Of Post Malone & 'Dance Monkey' This Year

Streaming giants Spotify and Apple Music have released their data highlights for 2019, proving just how big a year it has been for Australian artists both locally and overseas.

Tones & I, aka Toni Watson, is the highest ranked Australian artist on Apple Music with her track Dance Monkey the fifth most streamed song locally. She trails behind some huge songs out of the States including Post Malone and Swae Lee’s Sunflower (#1), Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s Shallow (#2), Halsey’s Without Me (#3) and Eastside by benny blanco, Halsey and Khalid (#4).

Dance Monkey was also the most Shazamed song in Australia and third across the world (behind Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy and Lewis Capaldi’s Someone You Loved). The song made her the most Shazamed artist in a single day of all time.

Watson’s success was apparent in Spotify’s Wrapped series too - Tones & I came in at #17 for global streaming figures and was the #2 streamed song in Australia, behind Post Malone and Swae Lee.

Dean Lewis and 5 Seconds Of Summer rounded out the top three of the Australian artist list behind Watson with their respective tracks Be Alright and Youngblood.

“To me it's [Spotify] made things so accessible and I’m constantly hearing new music from new people, which inspires me to write more songs cause I’m consuming so much more music!"

Adelaide hip hop group Hilltop Hoods continued their dominance on home soil too - they took out the most streamed Australian artist title. 5 Seconds Of Summer, Dean Lewis and Tones & I also ranked highly in this list.

There’s a huge amount of data to wade through but international highlights other than Post Malone's massive year across the board include Billie Eilish's When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? picking up most streamed album. Both she and Malone were atop Spotify's global most streamed artists list, alongside Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran and Bad Bunny. The most streamed song on Apple Music worldwide was Lil Nas X's Old Town Road - yee haw - and on Spotify, Camilla Cebello and Shawn Mendes' Senorita.
