The 2019 ARIA Awards is officially done and dusted closing another memorable chapter in the Australian music industry.
We rounded up some of the best (... and not so great) moments from last night's ceremony. Here are just a few notable mentions.
THE GOOD
TONES & I'S ACCEPTANCE SPEECH
"Sometimes I don't think that I'm the most relatable artist. I'm not into make-up or dresses or typically girly things. But to me, those things don't really define what it is to be a female artist in this industry anymore... what's most important is that you have to be a good person and care about others and carry yourself well."
Accepting her first ever ARIA Award for Best Female Artist last night, Tones & I blew the room away with a heartfelt speech.
THELMA PLUM
HALSEY
Here's proof that you don't need all the production and fancy lights and fireworks to put on a show. With only a table, a spotlight, one back-up dancer and, admittedly, a lot of paint, US singer Halsey provided easily one of the biggest highlights of the night with her performance of Graveyard.
NORTHLANE
In past years, the winner of the Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album category has been subject to criticism and debate but there was no disputing Northlane taking out the ARIA with Alien. The win gifts the Sydney five-piece their third ARIA Award for that category, a feat that has never been achieved before.
THE BAD
SHARING THE ACCEPTANCE SPEECH LOVE
While we're talking about Northlane, what was up with them getting almost little to no airtime on the TV broadcast last night? The band, who are currently touring through Europe, delivered a pre-recorded acceptance speech which was played in the ceremony but it wasn't given the time a three-time ARIA Award-winning outfit deserved.
Local favourites Sampa The Great and Kaiit were also not given the props they deserve during the broadcast with their respective wins for Best Hip Hop Release and Best Soul/R&B Release. Yes, we get it, TV has deadlines and time slots to work with. But maybe less time spent on puppets and snakes and Sophie Monk doing "bogan Britney" and more time on the artists that we're actually there to see could help?
THAT WEIRD EXCHANGE WITH PEKING DUK AND AGRO
Don't know what we meant with the whole puppets schtick? Oh, maybe you didn't see Agro last night. Remember, Agro the Australian puppet? From the '90s? Peking Duk summed it up perfectly when they presented Best Rock Album with old mate Agro - "How is Agro still allowed on TV in 2019?"
The below clip gives you a taste of the awkward exchange but the editing team deserves a medal for their work because this was WAY MORE AWKWARD in the room, trust us on that. Who knows, maybe we can expect Plucka Duck to make an appearance at the 2020 ARIAs? Actually, that'd be pretty cool.
THIS V AWKWARD GUY SEBASTIAN JOKE
Guy Sebastian took viewers backstage for a behind the scenes look at the show's catering situation. Sure it was a little awkward at first but then it became a lot awkward when Sebastian tried to land a joke about Flume's, ummm, viral moment a few months back.
And if you needed the whole night summed up in, say, 10 minutes, then the below has you sorted.
