Whenever Paul Kelly takes to the stage at a national event, the Australian legend always seems to be the highlight of the day, but even he can't tell you the secret to winning tens of thousands of people over with just a few songs.

Appearing on this week's episode of The Green Room with Neil Griffiths podcast to promote his new Greatest Hits album, Songs From The South: 1985-2019 (which is primed for a #1 debut on the ARIA Albums chart!), Kelly discussed his recent performance at the AFL grand final in September in front of over 100,000 people at the MCG.

"You just go out there and do your job as well as you can," Kelly told host Neil Griffiths.

"As a sporting crowd, they're not there particularly for the music."

Unsurprisingly, the revered songwriter's 1987 classic, Leaps & Bounds, garnered the most cheers on the day.

"Leaps & Bounds is a song that works well at the MCG for obvious reasons," Kelly said.

"It's only two songs. Some people could care less about it and some people could like it. Just go and do it."

Kelly will kick off his annual Making Gravy shows next month in Perth. For more details, click on theGuide.
