Australia's leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts organisation Bangarra Dance Theatre have unveiled their 2020 program.
The season kicks off with the return of 2017 show Bennelong, created by Bangarra Artistic Director Stephen Page. The work chronicles the life and legacy of iconic Aboriginal figure, Woollarawarre Bennelong, of the Eora nation. It will tour to Perth Festival, regional WA and NSW, and to western Sydney early next year.
SandSong: Stories From The Great Sandy Desert, a brand new work by Page and Frances Rings, tours through Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, Melbourne and Bendigo from June. The work has been created in collaboration with Wangkatjungka/Walmajarri Elders from the Kimberley region, drawing on their spiritual knowledge, and the input of the company's intenrationally acclaimed ensemble.
The show, set to a soundscape from composer Steve Francis, will explore their connection with their ancestral land, and the story systems of the region, through the symbol of Jila: Living Water. It will also draw upon the current situation in the region, where people struggle with discriminatory government policy and social dysfunction, and seek to navigate a way forward for Aboriginal peoples.
