Tones & I’s global hit Dance Monkey is unstoppable, this past weekend claiming its eighth consecutive week at #1 on the ARIA Singles chart to tie with Savage Garden and Gotye as the second longest-running number one by an Australian artist.
Last week, the Bryon Bay-based artist matched a record held by pop legend Kylie Minogue’s iconic 1987 hit Locomotion for over 30 years, and now Dance Monkey has tied with Savage Garden's Truly Madly Deeply (1997) and Gotye's Somebody That I Used To Know (2011), both of which racked up eight weeks in the top spot.
If Tones & I holds onto first place for another week, she’ll match Justice Crew, who set the record for the longest-running #1 single from an Aussie act in 2014 with Que Sera. If she maintains it for 10 weeks, she’ll not only claim that title, but be on track to be the longest-running solo female artist at #1, a record shared by Whitney Houston and Sandi Thom, both of whom had 10 week runs at the top.
To claim the all-time record on the ARIA Singles chart, Tones & I will need to spend 16 weeks at #1 to surpass Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You.
Outside of Australia, Dance Monkey is currently at #1 in New Zealand and has peaked at #1 in Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Norway and Sweden, while also jumping to #14 on the UK Single chart across the weekend.
Tones & I will embark on a sold-out tour of Australia this Friday. Check out theGuide for more details.
