After years of speculation, it has been confirmed that a fourth film in The Matrix franchise is in the works.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, lead stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their roles of Neo and Trinity, while The Matrix co-creator and director Lana Wachowski will write and produce the new installment.

“We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana,” Warner Bros Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich said in a statement.

“Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe.

Wachowski added, "Many of the ideas Lilly [Wachowski, Lana's sister and The Matrix co-creator] and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,.

“I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

Warner Bros have reportedly been working on a new The Matrix film for some time, with The Hollywood Reporter saying in 2017 that Michael B Jordan was attached to star.

The Matrix franchise is one of the highest-grossing to date and has generated over $3 billion in revenue.
