Kirribilli's Ensemble Theatre launched its 2020 season today, headed up by Aussie theatre mainstay Steve Rodgers' stage adaptation of 2006 plumber mockumentary, Kenny, starring Ben Wood.
The year-long program boasts eight new works out of 11 plays in total, including six plays by female playwrights. The works span from uniquely Australian stories to theatre classics by the likes of Harold Pinter.
As part of Sydney Festival, the season launches with the world premiere of Geoffrey Atherden's Black Cockatoo, inspired by the story of First Nations cricketer Johnny Mullagh.
John Wood stars in the new – and final – work by David Williamson, Australia's most produced playwright, family drama Crunch Time.
Ensemble follow that up with another world premiere Australian work, A Broadcast Coup, which excoriates the media industry.
Kate Champion directs Lucy Bell and Katherine Davies in Joanna Murray-Smith's Honour, a middle-class modern relationship drama.
Darren Gilshenan stars in Harold Pinter's The Caretaker about households, hoarding and homelessness.
Jamie Oxenbould features in the ghostly The Woman In Black, directed by Ensemble Artistic Director Mark Kilmurry.
Then Killing Katie: Confessions Of A Book Club articulates all the unspoken – and possibly murderous – tension in a community book club.
Unqualified 2: Still Unqualified is the sequel to last year's comedy, Unqualified, written by and starring Genevieve Hegney and Catherine Moore.
Kilmurry writes and directs Outdated, the story of how to date in your 40s, starring Rachel Gordon and Yalin Ozucelik.
To close off Ensemble's 2020 season, Hilary Bell adapts A Christmas Carol for the stage in a world premiere production directed by and starring her father, John Bell.
