Some of Adelaide’s best emerging acts will take the stage this Friday night as part of Music SA’s annual Scouted showcase, performing to local fans and industry who will make the trip for Indie-Con 2019 and the AIR Awards.

Punching well above its weight, South Australia produces world-class talent time and time again, and we had some of this year’s Scouted artists give us their thoughts on what makes the scene and community so vibrant.

JESS DAY

I think it's the diversity of genres and how they each individually gather very loyal followings of people who turn up to shows consistently. It feels like there is a strong community of music lovers that's brought together in many different styles of music within Adelaide.

STELLIE

I think what sets us apart is the strong ‘community’ atmosphere that has somehow been created amongst the Adelaide music scene. It almost feels like one big family. I don’t think I have ever had a single bad experience with any musos in Adelaide. Support is another big word I associate with our music scene. It’s such a special feeling when you look into the crowd and see the familiar face of another local Adelaide musician. It really makes you feel at home (even though we are already technically home).

ELSY WAMEYO

The Adelaide scene is dynamic. It offers a range of artists from different cultural backgrounds and communities who stage very unique music. It’s really a big puzzle with so many tiny different pieces that are so distinct, but when each piece is put together, it’s a beautiful art form that works.

THE MONTREALS

There are so many budding new artists that are coming into their stride which is super exciting!! Everyone is so nice and tight-knit!

RICKY ALBECK & THE BELAIR LINE BAND

There are a lot of great people making a lot of great music in Adelaide, but Adelaide is a real small place, so everyone knows each other and you feel comfortable with trying new things. Something that I think would be harder to find in a bigger city.

GLOWING

The Adelaide music scene is unique in its constant balance between diversity and unity. The bands and musicians this city has to offer are continually taking established genres and injecting them with new and invigorating energy. The Empty Threats, as an example, blur the lines between psychedelic rock and post punk, but the clarinet that features in their music is a small yet immense difference that helps them stand apart from their ilk. With this considered, they - and every other band in this scene - never find it difficult to fit into the family of musicians plying their trade on the ADL circuit. This means that line-ups in Adelaide are always diverse, always exciting, and always bristling with an inclusive and celebratory energy.

OC3ANEYES

What makes Adelaide’s music scene so unique would have to be the multiculturalism that exists within it.

LOCAL REVOLUTION

There's something very awesomely underrated about Adelaide and its music scene. People try to dismiss it or pretend it doesn't exist, yet there is definitely something big cooking - musically that is! Seeing friends like Electric Fields and fellow artists getting out there on the world stage, reminding the national and global community that Adelaide is on the map, is really inspiring. We also have two of the greatest festivals in the world - WOMADelaide and Adelaide Fringe that help inspire and connect our music community with the rest of the world and gives local artists the chance to collaborate with other incredible world-class artists. Not to mention the strong, resilient and beautiful Indigenous culture that has been here for so long and is now finally making its way to the forfront. A small town with a growing and thriving music scene and big opportunities - all happening on Kaurna Lands. That's why it's unique and I love it!

TOWNS

The Adelaide music scene is incredible because each band sounds so unique and distinctive but the sense of community is so strong between all the artists and genres, there’s not groups and cliques, everyone plays shows together but we’re a city appreciating the same thing - music.

ER@SER DESCRIPTION

Adelaide's music scene is like a family, inclusive of so many wild acts and supportive of all genres. Being a part of it really makes you feel like you're a part of something special.

VENICE QUEENS

What makes the Adelaide music scene great lately, is there seems to be a buzz to throw out the old stereotype of not being able to make something of yourself as a musician in Adelaide. When a couple of us were in our first bands we often got told that you need to move to Melbourne to do anything. Now as Venice Queens we really believe we can make something of the band operating out of Adelaide because we're seeing other people and initiatives involved in the industry push or make things happen in Adelaide.

DRESS CODE

I think the thing that makes the Adelaide scene so unique is the sense of pride and togetherness we all share. Adelaide had been disregarded by a lot of people for such a long time so I feel like a lot of the people here came together to rise above and show people how great our scene actually is. And now that people are starting to catch on, that togetherness is only getting stronger.

STACY SAYS

What makes the Adelaide music scene so special is how tight and lovely everyone in it is! We felt so welcome right from the start, and the more people and bands we meet at shows the more we love it!

WANDERERS

How supportive and diverse it is. I go and see friends performance that are in punk, grunge or electronic band and they come to see my band, even though we’re all very different stylistically. I find there aren’t really any ‘clicks’ or scenes that tend to keep to themselves. When a band is killing it, we all get behind it, everyone in Adelaide that cares about art will get behind it... it’s a beautiful thing.
