Just weeks after releasing their first new music in four years, Sleater-Kinney drummer Janet Weiss has announced she is leaving the band.

In a statement, Weiss, who joined the Washington-founded group in 1996, thanked her bandmates and their fans.

“After intense deliberation and with heavy sadness, I have decided to leave Sleater-Kinney,” the statement reads.

“The band is heading in a new direction and it’s time for me to move on.”

Shortly after, Sleater-Kinney issued their own statement on Weiss' departure.

“We are saddened by Janet’s decision to leave Sleater-Kinney.

“We thank her for joining us on this journey many years ago; we will always cherish our friendship and our time together.”

Sleater-Kinney are set to release their first album in five years, The Center Won't Hold, on 16 August.
