A song’s meaning or melodies can be elevated via a good music video, something Aussie singer-songwriter Ali Barter reinforces via her favourite clips of all time.

Prior to her Seven Songs To Leave Behind performance at Arts Centre Melbourne tonight alongside CW Stoneking and Sarah Blasko, Barter shared her seven favourite music videos with us.

Foo Fighters – Everlong

"I’m a huge fan of the clips Michal Gondry made with the Foo Fighters. This one is my fave, though. It’s weird and dark. Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins are so adorable. It’s great to see humour in clips. I try to do that in mine."

The Verve – Bittersweet Symphony

"So simple and beautifully shot. This clip is all time."

Cat Power – Lived In Bars

"Cat Power always has such a great sense of fun and humour in her darkness. This clip is a great example of that. It feels like a real local dive bar with all its characters and dropkicks."

Fiona Apple – Criminal

"The fisheye lens is so great. I love how busted down and fucked up Fiona Apple looks in this clip."

Hole - Malibu

"It’s dreamy and lush and sad. I just love this clip. Melissa Auf der Maur and Courtney love look like angels. It captures LA so well.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Despair

"The lonesome forlorn setting on top of a building is perfect for this song. It’s so simple and powerful. I’d love to shoot a clip in NYC!"

Father John Misty – Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings

"It captures being wasted and destructive so beautifully. Aubrey Plaza is brilliant in it. I’d love to incorporate some of that darkness and menace in my clips."
