APRA AMCOS has announced the return of the Professional Development Awards for 2019, with applications open now. 

Held every two years, the Professional Development Awards aim to create opportunities for emerging songwriters and composers. This year the prize pool will offer the nine individual winners over $15,000 worth of career support. 

Applications are now open to emerging songwriters and composers in the following categories: Popular Contemporary (three awards are given in this category that spans pop, rock, blues, folk, hip hop, dance and R&B) Country, Jazz, Art Music, Dance/Electronic, Film and Television, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.

The Development Awards have boosted the careers of a number of Aussie artists, including Gotye, Ainslie Wills, Ngaiire, Briggs and more. 

APRA AMCOS has also confirmed the Smugglers of Light initiative will return in 2019 with the award providing a promising First Nations musician or media practitioner with a grant of $12,000. 

Applications for the Professional Development Awards close on Thursday 27 June. Applications for the Smugglers of Light Foundation Music and Media Award close Friday 21 June.
