Midnight Oil have confirmed they are looking to head back into the studio and record new music after wrapping up touring duties this year.

The iconic Australian outfit have today announced two intimate headline shows in Wollongong and Canberra next month, their final shows in the country this year outside of their closing set at the Birdsville Big Red Bash festival in July, before aiming to release new music in 2020.

The Oils will also play some acoustic tracks at 1 Million Women LoveEarth Festival in Sydney on 25 May.

"We’ve been talking about recording again for years but The Great Circle Tour in 2017 was such a positive experience that it made us even hungrier to get back to making new music together," drummer Rob Hirst said.

"It’s a bit early to know what might come out of it yet - we’re just looking forward to getting back into that creative mode.”

If they make good on their plans, it would be Midnight Oil's first new music since 2002 studio album, Capricornia.

Tickets for the headline gigs in Wollongong and Canberra next month go on sale from 10am local time on Friday 12 April.
