Legendary US musician Dick Dale is confirmed to have passed away at the age of 81.
The Boston-born artist, known as 'The King Of The Surf Guitar' is widely considered as the main pioneer of surf rock music.
Dale's live bassist, Sam Bolle, confirmed his passing to The Guardian.
Dale's 1961-released track, Let's Go Trippin', is considered the first song to launch the surf music scene. His 1962 version of Misirlou proved to be one of his biggest hits and was used in Quentin Tarantino's iconic 1994 film, Pulp Fiction.
“Having Misirlou as your opening credit, it’s just so intense,” Tarantino told Rolling Stone in 2014.
“It just says you’re watching an epic, you’re watching a big, ol’ movie ... It just throws down a gauntlet that the movie now has to live up to.”
Following the release of his debut album Surfers' Choice in 1964, Dale went on to release a number of LPs, including his latest, 2011's Special Disorientation.
