After dominating at the Oscars earlier this week, Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody has received approval to screen in Chinese cinemas – but there’s a catch.
According to Hollywood Reporter, China will screen a censored version of the film, removing drug use and scenes where Rami Malek's Freddie Mercury kisses other male characters.
The news follows speculation the film would be blocked in China, given their stance on gay characters in the past and the fact a local streaming company removed the words “gay man” from Malek’s Oscars acceptance speech.
It’s expected at least one minute of footage will be removed before the film opens mid-March.
The Bohemian Rhapsody soundtrack is likely to reclaim #1 on the Aus charts this week following the Oscars, potentially blocking Hilltop Hoods' opportunity to make ARIA chart history.
