The Sydney space that hosted The Basement for 45 years will reopen this May as a live music venue once again under new management.
The team behind Mary’s Burgers and Lansdowne Hotel, Jake Smyth and Kenny Graham, are taking over the iconic venue and rebranding it as Mary’s Underground with plans to host live music every night in its downstairs restaurant, while burgers and beer are on offer upstairs.
The original bar will be left as is, but the stage will shift to the left of the room to “give the place a little shimmy and shake”.
Smyth and Graham will also continue their effects to showcase local booze and will offer a fully natural and sustainable wine list.
It’s the second beloved live music space in NSW Smyth and Graham have revived in the past two years, previously restoring Sydney's iconic Lansdowne Hotel to its former glory back in 2017.
The Basement closed its doors in April of last year, with management stating they had come to an agreement with the venue's property manager, AMP Capital, to end the lease ahead of its expiry as the premises no longer worked for them and they were looking for a new space.
Following a rally to keep the venue going as a live music space, AMP Capital confirmed their desire for the space to continue as a live music venue or bar under new tenants.
“We love our city, and are extremely excited about bringing a fat slice of Mary’s slap bang into the middle of the action," Smyth said.
"We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, inhabited by some of the most talented folk in the world. Sydney 2019 is glorious and we are all about celebrating that fact”.
