Police have confirmed they will be "out in force" at this weekend's Rainbow Serpent festival in Victoria.

In a statement issued today, Victorian police announced that the four-day Lexton dance event, kicking off this Friday, will have "zero tolerance for illegal activity".

"Every year police deal with serious crimes such as sexual assaults and drug trafficking at this event,” Ballarat Local Area Commander Inspector Dan Davison said.

“Last year we also saw far too many people making dangerous and illegal choices by getting behind the wheel when they were either drug or alcohol affected.

“The presence of drugs at music festivals and similar events and the risks involved in consuming them is always of concern both to police and the community in general.

“Attendees should watch out for their mates to ensure everyone has a safe festival experience.

“For anyone who is intending to take illicit drugs, we’d simply say don’t do it."

It comes as calls continue to grow for pill testing to be introduced at music festivals across the country. Rainbow Serpent organisers confirmed to The Music that pill testing will not be conducted at this weekend's festival.

"Unfortunately, current legislation doesn't allow us the capacity to conduct pill testing," organisers said.

"We will be hosting several talks and panels on progressive, sensible drugs policy and, of course, do everything we can to encourage patrons to make wise choices and practice self care. Dancewize will be on site alongside extensive medical facilities and Helper Huts in the campground where people can seek assistance if required."
