Nirvana’s smiley face is about as iconic as logos come, and given its significance, it’s not surprising the band is going after fashion designer Marc Jacobs for allegedly using its likeness without permission.

As Pitchfork reports, Nirvana are suing Jacobs, Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus for copyright infringement over the Redux Grunge collection, which features an altered version of the smiley face across a t-shirt, sweatshirt, and socks.

Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus were included in the suit for selling the items.

Nirvana are seeking monetary damages and requesting the allegedly infringing items be removed from sale.

Their suit states the “defendants’ misuse of Nirvana’s intellectual property to promote themselves and the 'Bootleg Redux Grunge' collection damages the goodwill associated with Nirvana and violates its rights in numerous ways.”
