With a doctorate in astrophysics, it’s not surprising Queen's Brian May was inspired to release new music around a historic NASA mission.
As Forbes reports, New Horizons - the guitarist's first new solo release in more than 20 years - is named after NASA’s ongoing mission and was released on January 1 to commemorate the most distant spacecraft flyby in history.
“I’ve always wanted to do space stuff ever since I was a kid, and obviously music has always been a huge part of my life," May said.
"So, this was an opportunity to, in a sense, join the two and make something unusual out of it."
The historic mission saw New Horizons flyby Ultima Thule, a 30km-wide icy object 6.5 billion km from Earth.
May also hinted at the possibility of a full-length album at some stage.
“I’m already thinking maybe there’s an album there,” he said.
“A lot of people have been saying to me, why don’t you make another solo album and maybe this one could be a space-themed, Brian May album. So it might happen, who knows? It just might.”
2018 was a massive year for Queen fans, with Bohemian Rhapsody dominating around the globe and launching the band’s back catalogue back into the Aussie charts.
