Influential French rock singer Johnny Hallyday has passed away, as confirmed by a statement from the French president's office.
The icon, who was 74 years old, announced he was being treated for cancer again last year, after undergoing surgery for colon cancer in 2009.
"We all have a piece of Johnny Hallyday inside every one of us," said the statement from President Emmanuel Macron.
"The public today is in tears, and the whole country mourns."
Hallyday was known as the “French Elvis”, bursting onto the scene in the ‘60s.
