Peter Garrett has hit back at Paul Keating during Midnight Oil's show in Sydney on Saturday night, after the former Prime Minister questioned why they would perform at The Domain.

As Fairfax reports, Keating said he was "surprised" that Garrett would "feel in any way comfortable squatting and profiting from Sydney's central piece of public land".

During the concert, Garrett stopped to call out Keating, who lives in nearby Potts Point.

"All I want to say is, if Paul Keating's got his window open, if he turns his Mahler down, his classical music down, have a listen to some Australian music," Garrett said.

The show was Midnight Oil's first since cutting their Melbourne concert short last week after guitarist Jim Maginie tore his hamstring on stage
