Melbourne's Corner Hotel is once again looking to hand off a serious stack of excellent prizes to another lucky act in its second annual Corner Award celebration, with 2017's shortlist having been announced today.
This year's finalists include local garage-punk faves Cable Ties, acclaimed Qld singer-songwriter Emily Wurramara, Melbourne duo Habits, fellow Victorians Jade Imagine, Sydney blues-rocker Jesse Redwing, ascendant hip hop luminary Manu Crook$ and NZ-born, Australia-based future-soul slinger Wallace.
The prize includes a stack of helpful goods and services for any emergent artist, including the pressing of a limited-edition 7" vinyl single, cash cheque for $2000, a headline show at the venue, pre-gig rehearsal time at Bakehouse Studios, $1000 for artwork costs from Mushroom Publishing, a two-week poster run from Plakkit, full-page ad in Beat magazine and 50 free T-shirts courtesy of Sound Merch.
Even being named on the shortlist is a boon in itself, however, with all finalist artists being granted three full days of off-peak rehearsal time in the largest room at Bakehouse (including backline and storage) and a group portrait by respected photographer Ian Laidlaw.
The Corner Award is decided by a group of industry champions including Helen Marcou (Bakehouse Studios, SLAM), Jacinta Parsons (ABC Local Radio), Jen Cloher (Milk! Records), Lauren Taylor (RRR FM), Linda Bosidis (Mushroom Publishing) and the Corner's own Anna Northeast, Jason Moore and Sally Mather.
