This week's latest and greatest...

Weezer – Pacific Daydream (Crush Music/Warner)

By now you either like Weezer or you don't, or you did and now you really don't. Their eleventh album, Pacific Daydream, sounds suspiciously young, the audio equivalent of a couple kids in a trench coat or one adult band wearing a teenager's T-shirt. Honestly, the bulk of the tracks feel more like a Weezer musical as written by One Direction, like they were aiming for top of the pops by way of paint by numbers construction and bland overproduction.

Ne Obliviscaris – Urn (Season Of Mist)

Proving once again that they are one of the finest and most important heavy bands on the planet, Melbourne's Ne Obliviscaris return with their third long player. Urn takes the listener on a journey into musical extremes at all parts of the musical spectrum, from quiet, wistful acoustic passages to a maelstrom of molten metal to cathartic, classically tinged flourishes, and just about everything in between. All propelled by musicianship of an illustrious calibre, tied together through bold and cohesive songwriting and crowned with one of the best and most enigmatic twin-vocal assaults in heavy music.

Timberwolf – Ikaros (Independent)

Timberwolf's debut is a delight. There's no two ways about it, this highly anticipated, spirited, textural, evocative album creeps up and tickles those hairs on the back of your neck; it's what powerful music is capable of and oh so wonderful when one chances upon it.
