A man who fatally punched a punter outside Melbourne's Cherry Bar in May has today been given a jail sentence of eight years.
As ABC reports, the Geelong local, Richard Vincec, can apply for parole in five years.
The news comes just weeks after Vincec pleaded guilty to punching Jaiden Walker after leaving the popular live music venue.
The court previously heard that Vincec had been "let off the leash" by his partner on the night of the attack, and was drunk, as well as high on cocaine and speed.
It's reported that the altercation between Vincec and Walker began after Vincec was spotted kissing a woman whom Walker was previously in a relationship with.
After shaking hands in an "aggressive manner", Vincec reportedly punched Walker in the left cheek who fell and hit his head on the ground.
Walker died in hospital days later as a result of a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain.
Supreme Court Justice Peter Riordan said at the sentencing that though Vincec's decision to" punch the deceased was made on the spur of the moment", his actions caused the death of "a fine young man".
Walker's father said of the sentencing, "It was probably where I thought the sentencing would go, so it's unfortunate his family has now lost their dad for a period of time, a long period of time.
"One person made a really bad decision that's ruined two families, impacted so many others.
"In a split second there's so many things that can change."
