Authorities are investigating whether the gunman who killed at least 59 people and injured 500 more in Las Vegas this past weekend was planning to target a three-day music festival that featured names like Lorde, blink-182 and Australian trio Middle Kids last week.

According to NBC News, a senior law enforcement source has claimed that Stephen Paddock rented out multiple apartments which overlooked the Life Is Beautiful festival site.

A spokeswoman for The Ogden building and Life Is Beautiful organiser Justin Weniger both declined to answer questions, telling NBC News, "This investigation is ongoing".

Las Vegas Sheriff Joe Lombardo also could not confirm if Paddock was planning to attack festival attendees, however just a week after booking The Ogden rooms, Paddock rented two rooms at Mandalay Bay where the shootings occurred.

An estimated 50,000 punters attended each day of the Life Is Beautiful event, which featured other names such as Chance The Rapper, Gorillaz, The xx, HAIM, Muse and more.

ABC have since reported that 23 weapons were recovered from the apartment where Paddock opened fire on the Route 91 Harvest festival, which he concealed in more than ten suitcases.

At least 19 further firearms, thousands of rounds of ammunition and an explosive were also found at his Nevada home.
