Cherished annual short-film festival Tropfest is set to return in 2018, and organisers have today put out a call for entries for what will be an event focused on diversity and representation in Australian film.
Following this year's successful achievement of gender parity among its finalists, Tropfest is shooting for a broader horizon than ever before, with organisers turning to the state government and Multicultural NSW to encourage submissions from filmmakers hailing from a diversity of cultural backgrounds, founder and director John Polson said.
"Australia is one of the most multicultural countries on Earth, which makes for some unique perspectives," he said in a statement. "We are calling for diverse stories from filmmakers of all backgrounds to showcase in the heart of Parramatta, Western Sydney — one of Australia's most ethnically vibrant communities."
Next year's Tropfest will maintain the annual tradition of requiring submitted films — which must be no longer than seven minutes — to contain the Tropfest Signature Item (TSI); in 2018, that'll be "Rose", and it's up to filmmaker discretion as to how they include the TSI, be it literally or otherwise, in their film.
Entries will open through the event's website on 15 October, closing 11 January 2018.
Tropfest 2018 will be held at Parramatta Park on Saturday 24 February.
