Beloved actor and country singer Harry Dean Stanton has passed away, age 91.

From his early years in films like In The Heat Of The Night and Cool Hand Luke, Stanton quickly established himself as the consummate character actor.

Stanton went on to appear in cult film favourites like Paris Texas, Repo ManChristine, AlienPretty In Pink, Escape From New York, the Twin Peaks offshoot Fire Walk With Me, Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas and the hugely successful The Green Mile.

As well as a long list of movie credits, Stanton was also known for his wide and varying TV roles including the likes of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, Getting On, Big Love and the latest series of Twin Peaks.

Stanton was also an established country singer, with songs like Cancion Mixteca and Hands On The Wheel, which saw him tour Australia in the '90s. Stanton also appeared in video clips for Ry Cooder, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Procol Harum.

Tributes have started pouring in from peers and fans alike.
