Sydney muso Cody Munro Moore — he of Big White and New Lovers renown — has is readying himself for the release of his debut studio full-length, Perfume Nightmare, and theMusic.com.au is stoked to be giving you a first listen to the new work today.
Seamlessly fusing post-punk sensibilities, pop nous and even Chicago house influences throughout its nine tracks, Perfume Nightmare does an admirable job of showcasing Moore's versatile, intelligent songwriting and panache for earworm hooks that set themselves deep in the listeners' brain well after the final chords have played out.
Throughout, Moore's polished warble recalls the kind of earnest, unkempt delivery brandished by The Cure's Robert Smith and Cursive's Tim Kasher, among others, a gleefully imperfect but eminently inviting tone that puts feeling ahead of form.
That's in no way a bad thing, though, and his vocal style thoroughly complements the eclectic soundscapes — riddled as they are with splashes of saxophone, keyboards/synths and other curiosities amid the usual driving drums and retro-touched guitars.
Amongst it all, "the body of work steeps heavily in narrative between cultural idols and the unaware self", Munro has previously said of the release. There's much more to the album than that, however; honestly, we'd recommend you just cut to the chase and get listening. You won't regret it, promise.
Perfume Nightmare will be released soon via Dinosaur City Records.
Moore will be launching the album with a free show (with RSVP) at the Oxford Art Factory this Thursday, 14 September, with support from Dominic Talarico, Hair Die, Holy Balm, Ôntrei and Volumes DJs.
