Crows Nest music store/school/studio/venue Big Music has teamed up with the College Of Sound & Music Production to launch a new vocational training course from next year, providing aspiring performers with a practical means to gain experience and knowledge about the music industry as they embark on their careers.
Dubbed the Big Music College, the course will result in students receiving a Certificate IV in Music Industry (Performance), and promises to cover "all the stuff they don't teach you at the Conservatorium, or in a traditional music degree".
The course is directed by veteran musician Ash Rothschild, who has spent the past three decades "playing, touring, writing, recording and teaching music" — so he knows well what he's talking about — and was a member of ARIA-charting '90s techno-grunge band Caligula, who toured alongside Depeche Mode, Pop Will Eat Itself, Beastie Boys, Buzzcocks and many more during their prime.
"The only way we learnt how the industry works was getting out there and doing it, and we made heaps of mistakes," says Rothschild. "I just wish there’d been a course like this when I was growing up.
"Our course is like a survival kit for aspiring musicians. We aim to give students the practical skills, knowledge and connections they need to give a career in music their best shot. And we do it over six or 12 months, not two or three years, at a fraction of the cost of a degree."
The course will commence in February 2018, and can be delivered across either one or two semesters, depending on the desired workload.
