The publicity train for Kathy Griffin's impending stand-up tour of Australia is off to a bit of an awkward start following an uncomfortable exchange with Sam Armytage, the co-host of Channel Seven's flagship morning program, Sunrise, today.

As News Corp reports, Griffin was appearing on the show to promote her upcoming Laugh Your Head Off tour, which gets under way in October, when Armytage raised the topic of the US comedian's controversial picture depicting herself holding a mock-up of President Donald Trump's decapitated head.

The incident was an obvious, if well-trodden, point of discussion, especially given the significant fallout that followed in its wake, and Armytage asked whether the comedian agreed that she may have gone too far with the joke.

However, Griffin wasn't having a bar of it, telling Armytage — smiling, but still — "You're full of crap."

"Stop this," she said. "You know this. Stop acting like my little picture is more important than talking about the actual atrocities that the President of the United States is committing."

While Griffin's tone remained somewhat jocular throughout, the exchange continued along frosty lines as she told the hosts that, despite an earlier apology for the picture — which she has now recanted — she thinks the incident was "blown out of proportion" and that "the outrage is complete BS".

You can watch the full exchange, which also included Griffin joking that she would "meet [Armytage] in an alley" (uh, yikes), below.

Kathy Griffin kicks off her Laugh Your Head Off tour in Sydney on Saturday 21 October. Tickets are on sale this Friday, 1 September.
