A number of popular Sydney pubs will ban screening the Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather superfight this weekend for fears that some punters could become violent.

As reported in The Sunday Telegraph, bars such as The Glasshouse Hotel in Maroubra Junction and the Empire Hotel in Kings Cross will not be screening the boxing match on Sunday, while police and security numbers will be increased throughout the venues that are showing the fight.

A task force from Eastern Beaches command is also expected to move around the area to assist with heavy crowds.

"As with all major events across the state, police have an understanding with licensed establishments whereby the safety of patrons is a priority and the enjoyment of the event should not impact the well-being of patrons," a spokesman said.

"A number of licensed premises have voluntarily agreed to not serve drinks in any glass containers, not serve alcohol 'shots' and ensure police are contacted in the event of an act of violence in the establishment.

"Police expect patrons to enjoy the event responsibly and will not tolerate anti-social behaviour or violence."
