The iconic MTV Unplugged music TV show, which screened memorable performances from the likes of The Cure, Nirvana and Oasis,  is set to make its comeback next month.

As Variety reports, Canadian artist Shawn Mendes will be the first to feature on the reboot, and is scheduled to perform in LA on 8 September.

MTV Unplugged first aired in 1989 and quickly became a popular fixture for big-name acts, who would perform acoustic sets and often covers of other artists.

MTV first announced Unplugged's return last year, with plans to hold the performances in different venues across the US.

The news comes only days after The Temper Trap announced they will be performing an acoustic set in Melbourne later this year as an homage to the TV series.
