The Jezabels Release New Standalone Single 'The Others'

Sydney indie-rockers The Jezabels may hit their 10th anniversary as a band this year, but they're showing they've still got plenty of fuel in the tank with new single The Others.

The song marks their first new material since the arrival of their acclaimed 2016 album, Synthia, and is being released as a standalone concern, unconnected with any other release or project.

Produced by their longtime collaborator Lachlan Mitchell and mixed by Bob Clearmountain (Bruce Springsteen, The Cure, Crowded House), the song finds the band "revisiting our romantic roots, though with a newfound directness", they said in a statement.

"Lyrically, it's a reflection of the kind of intense loneliness that makes simply being in one's own body feel painful," they said. "The unsolvable predicament of one's desire for another crossing over into a desire to lose yourself, where the body is both the blissful point of contact but, also, the thing which keeps you constantly separate.

"Musically, we have tried to sit that on a soundscape that is both euphoric and melancholy, driving but pensive."

The Others arrives in the wake of the recent announcement that The Jezabels will be playing Sydney's iconic Lansdowne Hotel for seven nights straight later this month, their first gigs in their hometown since October last year.

"We wanted to play a bunch of small, intimate shows to our Sydney fans where we could change up the set and play some songs we wouldn't normally have time for, and the reopened Lansdowne represents such an awesome new era for Sydney that it seemed right it should be there," frontwoman Hayley Mary said of the gigs.
