Iconic Hollywood record store Amoeba Music may have less time at its present site on Sunset Boulevard than originally thought, after its operators released a fresh statement regarding plans to redevelop the site and their impact on the shop's future.
In September last year, LAist revealed that real estate group GPI Companies had purchased the land on which Amoeba stands and commissioned an artists' rendition of their plans to replace the store with a mixed-use high-rise.
At the time, Amoeba said that it would be safe where it was for at least the duration of its lease, a several-year deal, if not longer. However, as Billboard reports, the reality of the lot's redevelopment has drawn all the nearer with the release of a new planning document solidifying GPI's intentions.
Though the owners of Amoeba say they are still "in discussions to remain at 6400 Sunset beyond our current lease", they are "also exploring our various options and have already been offered several spaces that could suit us well", suggesting they are no longer as confident as they once were that they'd be able to negotiate a lengthened stay with the developers.
However, it's not all bad news for fans of the long-standing store, which opened more than a decade-and-a-half ago and has grown to become something of a cultural icon for Los Angelean and international music aficionados.
"Rest assured, we are NOT closing, but we are now in a position where we may have to change locations in the coming years," the owners' statement said. "By no means does this mean that Amoeba is leaving LA."
