Margaret Court has doubled down on homophobic comments that sparked outrage across Australia this year, now urging people to vote against same-sex marriage in the impending postal vote.
According to WA Today, the former tennis champion expressed her views in a letter sent to the editor of Western Australia's daily newspaper.
"It is disappointing Australia has to go to any vote on same-sex marriage," Court wrote.
"We have, ever since foundation, been a proud nation; a nation which people migrated to – to the extent that it eventually had to be restricted.
"Australia's moral values are the envy of the world; nobody wants to leave and there are plenty in the queue wanting to get in. If we have to vote, let us vote no to gay marriage for the sake of Australia, our children and our children's children."
The news comes only hours after Aussie comedian Tim Minchin released a new song slamming the postal vote, saying, "The condescending shits think by making it postal, young people won’t vote – prove them wrong".
Meanwhile a number of artists who have or are set to perform at Margaret Court Arena have spoken out against Court, including Sigur Rós and Grinspoon.
US outfit Rise Against are another band slated to perform at the venue next year and, speaking exclusively to The Music last week, frontman Tim McIIrath hinted that they may address the controversy at the show.
"There's two different things – I feel that if you are a person who harbours homophobic sentiments then it should turn your stomach to have a band like Rise Against play in an arena named after you, then at the same time I feel like a band like Rise Against is in a position to kind of point out the injustice of having something like that existing in not just today's world but really in any world."
