Someday June — Melbourne, Victoria
Sometimes you hear someone's vocals and are immediately captivated by their strengths utilising the truly instrumental aspects of their utterances — and Someday June lead vocalist Bec Sykes possesses such a voice. All the better that she's backed up by the smooth depths of the other half of the Melburnian indie-folk outfit, Troy White, whose inviting harmonies complement Sykes' honeyed yet powerful tones with aplomb.
The pair of musicians share instrumental duties — at their live shows, both can be seen wielding guitars, with Sykes frequently handling a keyboard, too — and their creative synergy is on full display on their newly released four-track, self-titled debut EP.
The release opens with the ultra-smooth sounds of recent single Look Closer, laying minimalist electronic beats underneath restrained, reverb-laden guitar and Sykes' sublime vocal work. The band peel things back with the acoustic-driven Possibilities, which further demonstrates Sykes' strengths as a frontwoman and lyricist, as well as the band's talents for weaving in understated grooves through their deceptively layered tunes.
The use of piano in The Rabbit — another beautifully crafted track — is another lovely little addition, never being overbearing but nonetheless commanding attention, while the eased vibes of EP closer Anxious Heart brings the band's debut release to a strong, moreish finish.
As much as the band could be fairly billed as indie-folk, there's a lot going on in these four tracks, with soulful elements, alt-pop leanings, the slightest hint of R&B influences and, of course, the unobtrusive electronic beats that permeate throughout, broadening the songs' appeal and demonstrating that Someday June are certainly capable of crafting songs that will please a diversity of ears without ever falling into laziness.
The duo have spent the past couple of nights on their Victorian tour in support of the EP; they play the Blue Bean Love Cafe in Hepburn Springs tonight, and have further dates lined up in Geelong, Bendigo and Melbourne over the next few weeks.
