SXSW's Aussie industry meet-up events in Melbourne and Sydney return next month, and local event representative Phil Tripp has announced the eight speakers (four for each city) who will attend to provide insight and information about the annual affair in Austin next year.
In Sydney, interested parties will hear from Rapid director of technology Dan White, Secret Sounds Touring promoter Marc Sousley (ex-C3 Presents), Seventh Street Media's Luke Girgis and Sounds Australia's export music producer Glenn Dickie, all of who have attended at least two iterations of the US event.
In Melbourne, the line-up comprises Noise11 executive producer Paul Cashmere, Pause Festival founder and director George Hedon, technologist, writer and Thought Police creative director Ben Keenan, and One Love Music Group general manager Ant Celestino — again, all multi-time attendees of SXSW.
The object of the meet-ups is to provide information to artists to help them with their applications and to provide strategy on how to maximise their exposure, as well as provide managers, labels, publishers, promoters, agents and music technology professionals what SXSW can offer them in their careers.
With film playing an ever-increasing role in the make-up of South By, filmmakers, interactive multimedia creators and internet/app/software entrepreneurs are encouraged to attend to better their chances of standing out among the throng, with the meet-and-greets also designed to provide insight and information about how to effectively get across to SXSW, logistics strategies while at the festival and generating networking opportunities.
"Since 2002, when only five bands played one show each and only 20 delegates attended, we’ve grown phenomenally to the point where Australia has built its own strong brand in music performance with over 40 bands playing multiple showcases, private parties and the iconic Aussie BBQ in 2017," Tripp said in a statement. "The list of bands who played this year is attached as part of a recounting by year of over 380 homegrown talents who have taken no prisoners at the crash barriers in the past nine years."
Sydney's SXSW meet-and-greet will be held at The Lansdowne Hotel from 5.30pm on Tuesday 1 August, with Melbourne's following at the same time the next night, at The Corner Hotel. RSVPs are essential, and should be sent through to tripp@sxsw.com.
Band submissions are open now through 20 October, while delegate registrations will open on 1 August, US time.
