Aussie singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Tash Sultana is having a ridiculously successful year.
Having sold out stages at home and around the world over the past several months, her momentum has never been stronger. She's already knocked over a raved-about national tour here in Aus and is now in the throes of a sizable jaunt through Europe (which lasts till September) before getting ready to tackle the United States and Canada.
Yet, despite her global acclaim, she's remained remarkably down-to-earth through it all, as a candid new video posted to her Facebook page demonstrates. Talking to a camera from a couch, juxtaposed against footage of her playing at venues such as Sydney's Enmore Theatre, London's Scala and Amsterdam's Melkweg, Sultana speaks with an openness and humility in an "honest conversation about how I'm feeling at this point in time" about her journey from open-mic nights as a teenager to some of the world's biggest stages, a path that didn't come without its fair share of lessons.
"I think when you completely love what you do, then it does take you somewhere else," she begins. "Like, I'm not trying to go anywhere else. It's just what happens, and that's how I know that that is exactly my passion and exactly where I need to be in my life, because as soon as that music plays — not even when I'm playing music, when other people play music, listen to music, anything to do with that — it's just like, sucked in. Always have been since I was a little kid."
"I remember at the start, when I was getting into music, I couldn't believe that there were some people who just hated it — hated it," she says later in the clip. "And then I was like, that's such an ignorant thing for me to think about myself, that everyone would enjoy that, because I don't enjoy everything.
"But there's a margin of people that absolutely will love the shit that you're doing, and that's it," she says. "That is your focus, and that is it. Just them. Not the other people. It took me ages to learn that."
Check out the video below. Tash Sultana continues her world domination from 26 July, when she hits Italy's Mojotic Festival before moving on to stages in Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and beyond.
If you're worried that all the worldwide attention means she'll neglect her fans back home, fret not: she'll be back home before then to perform at Splendour In The Grass, and return to our shores again in November, in time to play Canberra's Spilt Milk festival.
