Stalwart Brisbane venue Crowbar has pulled together a line-up par excellence for a benefit gig in honour of Liam Brennan, of cult-favourite Brissy punks Shutup Shutup Shutup, following his recent diagnosis with Hodgkin's lymphoma.
For obvious reasons, the long-serving band — who changed their name from Release The Hounds last year — have been pretty quiet since Brennan's diagnosis back in April, having had to pull out of a show at The Zoo with Clowns during their Lucid Again national tour in May.
"About a month ago Liam was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma, a Cancer growing in the lymph nodes of his chest," the band wrote in a statement at the time. "He is doing well, and staying positive, apart from a lack of hair and beard due to chemo, he is still the same dickhead. This cancer has a very high success rate of treatment and doctors are sure he is going to come out of this well. Hopefully in less than 6 months.
"However, he has been undergoing Chemotherapy to treat the cancer and isn't able to play shows at the moment … Please keep Liam in your thoughts and send positive vibes our way. We look forward to playing again once this little hiccup has passed."
Brennan's obvious and far-reaching impact on the local alt community is such that the folks at Crowbar have now, "in the spirit of helping out a mate", gathered up the likes of Flangipanis, Goon On The Rocks, Tai Sui, Sleepwell, Being Jane Lane, The Gutter Birds and Emmy Hour for a special show they've called LIAMFEST!, "to tell cancer to fuck off".
The legends at Young Henrys (who'll bring the beers) are also on board, as are the team at DVNT Clothing, who'll be staging a giveaway on the evening.
All proceeds from the show, which will be held on Friday 11 August, will be donated to Lymphoma Australia. You can find out more about what they do at the organisation's website.
Tickets are $12.25 and available now via the venue/Oztix.
