Victoria police are pushing for a new policy where punters can be notified of bad batches of drugs going around via SMS on their mobile phones.
According to Herald Sun, the proposed messages would be sent out to bars, nightclubs and its patrons and work in a similar way to bushfire alerts, where information can be relayed on people's Facebook feeds, depending on their location or check-ins.
It has been reported that the idea is being discussed after 20 people overdosed on a toxic batch of MDMA in January, while 22 more reportedly overdosed on GHB just two weeks later.
"Victoria Police has strong concerns about drug use and drug overdoses across the state, including any drug activity in the Stonnington and Port Phillip areas," Victoria Police spokesman Thomas O’Byrne said.
"Police remain happy to assist, where possible, efforts by the relevant health authorities and stakeholders to improve health messaging systems.
"Victoria Police remains engaged with a range of stakeholders to progress a collaborative approach to harm prevention from drugs and alcohol."
The news comes only weeks after it was revealed discussions were underway to allow Victoria police to search punters for drugs without reason at dance festivals.
