It’s been almost a decade since US comedy legend Chris Rock brought his stand-up to Australia, and by all accounts, his highly anticipated return this month is going to be well worth the wait.

The acclaimed comedian, actor and director has been touring Total Blackout around the US in recent months and although it’s been a while since he was a regular on the touring circuit, it’s clear he still has the same charm and natural stand-up presence he became world renowned for in the early ‘90s.

Mlive reported that Rock “showed zero signs of rust” at his Detroit show in April with Detroit News stating “he’s still a vital comic force”, all while shifting his perspective somewhat and getting more personal with the audience as he details his divorce and other intimate struggles.

“It was remarkable, fascinating, sad and hilarious, all at once, that trademark stage prowl and bark intact,” reads a Milwaukee review.

While material on Trump and gun control might not be as relevant to Australian audiences, the New York Times said it was the “personal, not the political” that stood out about the Blackout Tour.

It was back in 1996 that his seminal Bring The Pain stand-up special dropped on HBO, solidifying him as one of comedy’s all-time great, and more than 20 years on, he still holds onto that title.

Rock’s return to the touring circuit will be immortalised by Netflix later this year as part of a $40 million deal that includes two comedy specials, some of the material of which you can catch on his massive Australian tour.
