Oscar-winning director, Steve McQueen, has confirmed he will get behind the camera to film a new documentary on late hip hop legend, Tupac Shakur.

As Deadline reports, the 12 Years A Slave filmmaker came on board after the Estate trustee, Tom Whalley struck a deal with Amaru Entertainment, the company created by Tupac's late mother, Afeni Shakur.

"I am extremely moved and excited to be exploring the life and times of this legendary artist," McQueen said.

"I attended NYU film school in 1993 and can remember the unfolding hip hop world and mine overlapping with Tupac's through a mutual friend in a small way. Few, if any shined brighter than Tupac Shakur.

"I look forward to working closely with his family to tell the unvarnished story of this talented man."

The news comes only months after Shakur was posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

Meanwhile, a biopic of the iconic rapper, All Eyez On Me, is due to be released in cinemas worldwide next month.
