The Rock & Roll Writers Festival is Australia’s first, and only, literary festival devoted to exploring and celebrating the creative spark and relationship between writing and music. The festival aims to surprise, entertain, enlighten and challenge - through discussions and interviews with some of Australia’s finest authors, songwriters, lyricists, commentators and ratbags.
We love bands that incorporate literary concepts and references into their songs, as much as we love books that include references to music to enhance the experience for the reader. We are fans of great writing and great songs. Words and music that make you cry, laugh, gasp, shout and above anything else, feel.
We’ll have WRITERS whose work references music, is somehow affected by and are passionate about it. We’ll have SONGWRITERS who include literary references in their songs, whose work has been inspired by something they read or are voracious readers.
Despite the title, it’s any and all genres. First and foremost, Rock and Roll is an attitude.
We will curate a unique, weekend-long event that initiates discussion of how music and literature influence each other. Bringing together authors, musicians and artists in a program of interviews, presentations, talks and panel discussions. It’s going to be challenging, humorous, brave, funny, and probably dangerous at times. It won’t be corporate or boring, nor avoid the tough issues.
Naturally we’re hosting the event at a Fortitude Valley music venue, The Brightside, which will offer great food and refreshments as well as the opportunity to purchase the books and music of our presenters and speakers. The venue has two large spaces, one indoor, one outdoors, plus a comfortable beer garden. It is well-served by public transport, has a 24-hour parking building next door, and is centrally located in Brisbane’s famed bar, entertainment and dining precinct.
