Raw For Africa 2011

The International Anti Poaching Foundation’ (IAPF) family fundraising event, RAW for Africa will be held at the Mornington Racing Club to raise funds to help protect Africa’s wildlife from illegal trafficking on January 29, 2011 from 12 noon.

The family fundraising event will become the Mornington Peninsula’s largest and most active charity event, including music entertainment, free children’s activities and food and drinks in a relaxed atmosphere, for a great cause. Last year’s event sold out in a matter of days, with close to 1,000 guests attending.

Set up by Mornington Peninsula local Damien Mander, the IAPF is an Australian registered, 100 per cent not-for-profit organisation that is aimed at raising awareness of the devastating effects poaching has on Africa’s wildlife. The IAPF train and equip rangers to protect these animals and ensure they are around for future generations. They also conduct community based education projects, reforestation and veterinary rescue of wildlife.

Damien said this years’ event promises to give guests another memorable day.

“There will be heaps musical acts, heaps of food and an abundance of entertainment and educational activities for the kids,” he said.

“Funds raised at the event will go toward the construction of new educational and training facility in Zimbabwe, where the IAPF operate on the ground to help stop the crises of illegal animal trafficking, which is now the third largest criminal industry in the world.”

Music line up for the event includes:

Triple J darling child Dallas Frasca is unleashing a debut album, Not For Love Or Money, and the lady means business. The Victorian-based roots girl made her name when she won the alt-friendly radio station’s Light Your Fuse award in 2006, leading into three solid years of touring, collecting a sizeable fan base while she was at it.

RED INK are back on board again this year and are not your average band, they are not here for a quick rise to the top, to jump on a style trend or to ride a wave of hype. These guys are musicians, good ones. Over the last four years they have proved that they are here to do the hard yards. Their hundreds of gigs across the country and thousands of hours crafting their sound have paid off in the form of an underground following strong across Australia and sinking its claws in across the world. They have found a sounds which is uniquely theirs and defies conformity along clichéd genre lines.

Plus, in an age of dancing robots and the electric toothbrush, the Quarry Mountain Dead Rats are taking it back to a simpler time, where pickin’ was fast and the banjo was king. With fire in their bellies, these musical comrades hailing from the Mornington Peninsula, bring their raw and gritty version of bluegrass kicking and hollering into the modern day. The influence of old-time mountain-music combined with rock’n’roll sensibilities make the Quarry Mountain Dead Rats an act that make you sit up, take notice and come back for more.

Other music acts include the Sophisticants, Ben Smith Band, Tub O Vas, President Roots, Dirty Boogie Band, Oakley Greneel, The Resignators and Guesswork with more to be announced.

RAW for Africa 2011 is an environmentally friendly event, carbon offset with tree planting across the Mornington Peninsula.
