Described by some like a younger Augie March cross bred with The Shins, Oh Mercy's style is consistently difficult to pin down. What is certain is that, while they cite classic rock'n'roll and folk influences, the songwriting partnership of Alexander Gow and Thomas Savage creates music unmistakably of their own style.
The duo at the heart of Melbourne four-piece Oh Mercy, blend evocative and intelligent lyricism with a strong pop sensibility. In the Nude for Love, the bands first full EP release is both a taste of their forthcoming debut album Privileged Woes, and a preview of the depth of the young songwriters polished pop brilliance.
The EP features Lay Everything On Me, added to high rotation on Triple J in April 2009, and Seemed Like a Good Idea, a track also highly rotated on Triple J after being announced as a Next Crop Artist during Australian Music Month in late 2008. Newly recorded acoustic tracks In My Stride and Needs a Woman plus older favourite Too Far To Please, along with a guest appearance by a family of Kookaburras, are the kind of songs that make In the Nude for Love such an exciting release.
Feature tracks were recorded by Myles Wootton (The Panics), mixed by Matt Voigt (Cat Power, The Dirty Three, Paul Kelly) and mastered by Steve Fallone at Sterling Sound New York (The Strokes, TV on the Radio), while Matt Voigt took care of all duties on the acoustic tracks.
Having toured relentlessly over the last year with the likes of The Panics (2008), Whitley (2008), Sparkadia (2008), End Of Fashion (2009), The Kaiser Chiefs (2009) & Ben Kweller (2009) in their trusty touring companion Pauline the Hiace, Oh Mercy are well versed in the ways of the road.
