THIS WEEK… Dark side of the P&O? - Just when you think you’ve seen and heard it all… Pink Floyd are about to become the focus of a themed boat cruise. Even though there will be no actual members of the band boarding the ship “The Great Gig in the Sea” (which is a parody of the Floyd song ‘Great Gig in the Sky’) will set sail with an acclaimed substitute – “Think Floyd USA”. Think Floyd USA pride themselves as being one of ‘the number one’ touring cover bands. The Cruise ship will set sail from the port of Miami to the Bahamas on May 1st 2009. Amongst live tributes every night there will also be many on-board activities including Pink Floyd trivia, parties, games and “special guests”. It’s probably worth selling any rarities and bootlegs you have of the band in order to attend because let’s face it; you don’t get much bigger opportunities to prove you’re a fan than this. And besides postcards quoting ‘wish you were here’ will never be funnier to send. Heh!
Dr. Dre drinks and you can drink Dr. Dre drinks too... - The Dr has given his prognosis and the prescription reads… Cognac? Rapper/Producer Dr. Dre is set to launch his own branded range of alcoholic drinks. The music icon has gone into cahoots with drink manufacturers ‘Drinks Americas’ to produce an ‘Aftermath cognac’ plus and 80% proof sparkling vodka in the US within the next 2 months, so it’s duty free for all those outside the country. Following the launch of his new range of bevies Dr. Dre is expected to release his much anticipated third studio album - “Detox” … hmmm, what?
Hilltop Hoods spin their decks elsewhere… - Hilltop Hoods have announced their spilt from Obese records. They’ve honored their 3 album deal with Obese and have made the decision as a band to start their own label; Golden Era Records. The Hip Hop outfits new and exciting venture will not only be responsible for releasing all of their future material but also some of the finest acts of the same genre. There has however not been any bad blood between the Hoods and their previous keepers and the split looks to be very amicable on both sides. All aspiring hip hop outfits, you now have a new outlet to send all those demo tapes and band shots!
Pickpocket music fans make music stars loads light handling… - Musical legends Iron Maiden and Iggy Pop have both had some unfortunate dealings with theft in more recent times. Iron Maidens guitarist has had his white Jackson Stratocaster guitar stolen after a gig in Athens on Saturday. It has not only his signature but also a hefty amount of sentimental value to the musician. The band has offered a signed tour jacket and a letter of thanks if the guitar is returned. It’s apparently the only one of its kind in the world so will be quite hard for the bandit to off load. In another rock-related pilfering it seems that Iggy Pop has had an entire truck full of thousands of dollars worth of Iggy and the Stooges gear was stolen outside the Embassy Suites Hotel in Montreal, Canada. The truck has been recovered in Canada but there is still no sign of the gear. Even though the truck contained a large majority of Amps, Drum Kits and guitars along with a bucket load of memories the band, in true rock n roll spirit, did not let this hinder their tour and borrowed replacement instruments for their next show in Toronto. Keep an eye on your local Cash Converters huh?
